A Coquitlam RCMP officer uses a laser speed reader to detect speeds. In the first two weeks of school, police will be enforcing school zone speed limits, checking for distracted drivers and helping parents install car seats properly.

As 30,000 students head back to school in the Tri-Cities this Tuesday, Coquitlam RCMP will be ramping up enforcement of school speed zones, cracking down on distracted driving and making sure families know how to install child seats properly.

The blitz will help families get off to school safely, said RCMP spokesman Michael McLaughlin.

“Traffic is always an important issue for people in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam but we’d like people to understand it’s not just ‘the other person’s’ problem,” he said in a press release. “We could all improve. We’re encouraging drivers to bring their best driving behaviours for back-to-school and to be open to developing new and better habits in the future.”

Mounties and Speed Watch volunteers will visit at least 12 school zones throughout Coquitlam and PoCo next week, with more school zones visited the following week.

The driving speed for school zones is 30 km/hr from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Next Friday, Sept. 6, police will be enforcing distracted driving regulations to make sure people aren’t using their smart phones while driving.

Concern about improper installation of child safety seats has prompted police to hold an education and enforcement event in collaboration with ICBC. On Sept. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. in the parking lot near the water park at Coquitlam's Town Centre Park, parents can get advice from child passenger safety technicians, Mounties and volunteers.

“We’ll have everything you need to learn the best ways of keeping your children safe in a vehicle,” McLaughlin said.
