Mounties issued more than 1,100 violation tickets in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam during a month-long crackdown on high-risk driving in May.
According to Coquitlam RCMP, 20% of the fines were for distracted driving while 30% were for unsafe driving and other infractions at intersections. Another 13% were handed out for speeding and 53 drivers were caught operating a vehicle without a licence.
Cpl. Neil Roemer of RCMP Traffic Services said in a press release that the May campaign served to raise awareness of the kinds of work officers do on a daily basis.
"Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services uses the intelligence-led, community-based proactive service delivery model," he said. "That means police officers are proactively conducting road safety enforcements to reduce the number of crash-related fatalities and injuries."
He added that as the weather gets warmer, more officers are expected to be out on the streets providing enforcement.
According to ICBC statistics, high-risk driving contributes to 44% of all police-reported crashes that result in an injury or fatality. In the Lower Mainland, ICBC says, an average of 3,500 casualties occur each year as a result of high-risk driving, with failing to yield being the second leading cause of crashes.
