A Coquitlam man is facing charges after allegedly assaulting a man who approached him while he was breaking into a vehicle.

Coquitlam RCMP were called to the 2900-block of Skyridge Court at about 11 p.m. March 27 after the witness was able to get away from the assailant and call police. He was not injured.

The suspect was located and arrested without incident several blocks away while allegedly breaking into other vehicles.

Robert Becking, 22, faces charges of assault, four counts of theft, possession of a break-in instrument and two counts of trespassing at night. He was released under conditions to not go near the 2900-block of Skyridge Court, abide by a curfew and not to possess break-in tools.

"We are reminding residents that confronting a criminal is a very dangerous thing to do," said Cpl. Jamie Chung. "If you see anything suspicious, call us from a safe location. We're trained to deal with these kinds of situations."
