Coquitlam leadership forum targeted to youth

Leadership is key to the success of any organization and the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce wants to play a role in inspiring the young leaders of tomorrow.

With the support of Douglas College and Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club, the chamber is inviting high school, college and university students to hear from some of the region's most prominent figures in education, business and sports.

Rick Pasin, chair of the chamber's Youth Entrepreneurial Committee, said this is the second time the leadership forum has been held and he's hoping to recreate the same synergy between young people and leaders that developed the last time around.

"It was one of those YouTube moments. We kicked ourselves for not having taped it," he said of the event, which brought 50 to 60 youth together with key leaders from a variety of industries.

This year's event, set for Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Douglas College's David Lam campus, will feature Tom Grant, superintendent of School District 43; Brittany Timko, national soccer team member who played on the Canadian women's Olympic team won the bronze at the London Olympics; and Anita Huberman, CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade.

Pasin said students will get ideas about leadership from these prominent individuals that they can use in their own lives and careers.

He said Grant has played a transformational role at SD43 and writes a blog on leadership; Timko is a credit to her country, a terrific speaker and wants to give back to the Tri-Cities; and Huberman has been named one of the top 40 under 40 influential people for driving her organization to focus on the biggest needs of the community, including security, homelessness and early childhood education.
