Nonprofits organizations looking for a bit of cash this fall to pay for part of a project or activity costs can apply to the City of Coquitlam next month.

From Sept. 3 to Oct. 1, 2024, the municipality will open its Spirit of Coquitlam intake for groups to bid on the gaming funding that comes from provincial government via the Great Canadian Casino Vancouver, in Coquitlam.

Since it started in 2002, city council has awarded more than $9.5 million to 254 community organizations.

In May, council OK’d the spring 2024 round and handed out $183,424 in Spirit of Coquitlam grants to 21 groups.

Among the biggest disbursements were to:

  • Coquitlam Junior Adanacs Society
    • $25,000 for the 2024 Minto Cup national championship
  • North American Chinese Culture Promotion Society
    • $18,000 for World of Love multicultural carnival
  • Austin Heights BIA
    • $17,200 for Hollydaze in the Heights 2024
  • Stage 43 Theatrical Society
    • $15,000 for 2024–25 subscription play series
  • Centennial Secondary School PAC
    • $13,537 for three community carnivals hosted during 2024 football season home games
  • Diwali Celebration Society
    • $11,000 for 2024 Colour Fest

To be eligible, the proposed projects or activities must happen in Coquitlam and benefit Coquitlam residents. And priority may be given to groups who haven’t received grant money in the past.

The successful candidates will be named in December.

To help applicants with the grant criteria, the city will host webinars on Sept. 11 and Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.; to sign up, you can visit the city website in September.
