Two people were injured after a fire broke out at a Coquitlam home Thursday night.

Fire Chief Wade Pierlot said the incident occurred at a single-family home on Buoy Drive at around 6 p.m. and the structure was fully involved by the time crews arrived.

"It was primarily a defensive fire from the get go," he told The Tri-City News Friday morning. "It sounds like it may have started in the kitchen."

Pierlot added that the two occupants made their own way to the hospital and were not at the home when firefighters arrived. They sustained injuries but were expected to recover.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the blaze and officials were still at the scene Friday morning.
