More local families will be able to afford to register their kids in sports activities because players from the Coquitlam Express hockey team also like to golf.

Last Friday, Oct. 18, general manager Tali Campbell, owner Fayaz Manji and captain James Shannonpresented a cheque for $41,227.54 to Chris Wilson, the director of KidSport Tri-Cities.

The money is the proceeds from the Express’s fourth annual charity golf event that was held Sept. 11 at the Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club.

More than 125 golfers, including current players, Express alumni, supporters and representatives from the community teed off at the 2024 tournament.

Since the event was founded in 2021, it has raised more than $108,000 for local organizations like Canuck Place, the Canucks Autism Network and FOCUS Canada.

Campbell said the golf tournament’s success “is a testament to what our community and this team can achieve when we come together.”

KidSport helps families in need ensure their kids can stay active by subsidizing their registration fees for organized sports programs with grants up to $500 per child a year.

On the ice, the Express are off to a strong start with eight wins, three losses and a shootout loss in 12 games. Leading the way has been Shannon, who has nine goals and five assists.

The team is atop the BC Hockey League’s (BCHL) Coastal Conference standings. Its 17 points is one better than the Chilliwack Chiefs, which has played one less game.

Coquitlam travels to Vancouver Island this coming weekend to play the Nanaimo Clippers on Friday, Oct. 25, and the Alberni Valley Bulldogs the next night.

Its next home game is Wednesday, Oct. 30, at noon, when the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex will be packed with kids from local schools as part of an annual partnership with School District 43 (SD43).
