School District 43 administrators will be meeting next week to share ideas about effective anti-bullying measures that could be employed district wide.
At Tuesday's board of education meeting, Superintendent Tom Grant said the district's Safe Schools Task Force will be examining current bullying practices and making recommendations for improvement in the wake of the tragic death of CABE Grade 10 student Amanda Todd.
The plan is to define bullying and establish a consistent process for reporting bullying and following up on it and Grant said an intolerance of bullying and people working together to end it should be her legacy.
"Awareness and education are key to preventing bullying. We as a community need to be more aware of the symptoms of bullying, have procedures in place to intervene in these situation and react appropriately when faced with an issue of bullying,"he said.
Todd, who committed suicide after posting an online video chronicling years of bullying and harassment, went to elementary, middle and high school in SD43, including several months at Coquitlam Alternative Basic Education (CABE) School in Coquitlam.
The district is also working with UBC experts on the issue and waiting for more details about the provincial Erase strategy, that will provide bully-awareness training for educators and a mobile app for reporting cyberbullying.
Meanwhile, Todd's family has yet to announce firm details of a public service planned for Nov. 17 at Citadel middle school in Port Coquitlam but has established a legacy fund in her name at the Vancouver Foundation.
