Community discussion on bullying in Port Coquitlam

Bullying and how to stop it will be the topic of a panel presentation in Port Coquitlam on Oct. 24 by the Joint Family Court and Youth Justice Committee in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross.

Bullying: It Ends With You will include a screening of the documentary How to Help: A Youth Perspective on Bullying. A panel discussion will follow the film, featuring perspectives from educators, counsellors and researchers, including Cindi Seddon, panel chair and principal of Summit middle school in School District 43, who is the author of Bully Beware.

Other panelists will be: Shelley Hymel, of the UBC Department of Education and Counselling Psychology and Special Education; Kim Schonert-Reichl, UBC Department of Education and Counselling Psychology; Brenda Morrison, co-director for the Centre of Restorative Justice at SFU; Aaron White, school psychologist/district counsellor from West Vancouver; and Jim Mandelin, youth advocate, author and public speaker.

According to a study of students in Grade 8 to 10 in a B.C. city in 1999, 64% of kids were bullied at school, 12% regularly, 40% of students tried to intervene and 64% of students considered bullying a normal part of school life.
