A chicken was brought to safety last night (July 27) after it was reportedly kicked around by three teenagers in Coquitlam.
"This is one 'jail bird' we would like to set free and reunite with their owners," said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins.
Police believe "fowl" play is suspected after they were called to the incident in the City Centre neighbourhood at 9:15 p.m. on Thursday.
Officers were told a group of teenage youth were "kicking and striking" the chicken while huddled around it near the intersection of Glen Drive and Johnson Street — just north of Coquitlam Centre.
The teens fled the scene before Mounties arrived, Hodgins said in a news release.
The chicken was left behind and temporarily taken into RCMP's care before it was handed over to the local BC SPCA.
"We weren't sure what to expect, but the chicken was quite friendly," Hodgins added, believing the apparent domesticated animal may be someone's pet.
"It didn't squawk or fuss, it just went along with us like it knew it was in the wrong place."
She said the chicken is currently in a short-term "roost" until police are able to find its owner.
Meanwhile, RCMP are asking the public to help find and identify the teens involved, including witness statements and possible video footage.
They are described as:
- Three boys
- One white
- Two Middle Eastern
- 15 to 16 years old
- Wearing black t-shirts and jeans
