It was a tough day for both the Centennial Centaurs and Terry Fox Ravens at the Tsumura Invitational high school boys basketball tournament Thursday, Dec. 5 at the Langley Events Centre.
The Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam schools were each bounced into the consolation round after losing their quarterfinal games at the annual pre-season showcase of the province’s top varsity basketball teams.
The Centaurs struggled to score in an 86-55 loss to the St. Patrick Celtics, the second-ranked AAA team in British Columbia.
Taisho Gilmour’s 15 points led Centennial, which managed to score just 13 field goals the entire game. Alex Birsan added 13 points.
The unranked Terry Fox Ravens led Vancouver College early in the fourth quarter but then gave up 16 points while scoring only six the rest of the way in a 67-59 loss to the Fighting Irish.
Still, the result was a bit of a victory for the young Ravens, which has only one senior on its line-up comprised largely of sophomores and juniors; nine days earlier Fox was thumped 108-63 by Van College in its season opener.
Marvin Reyes and Jayson Ikani each scored 20 points for the Ravens, which will play the St. George’s Saints this afternoon in a consolation game.
Centennial plays the Burnaby South Rebels in its consolation round game while the Heritage Woods Kodiaks from Port Moody will try to win its first game of the tournament after two losses when it plays the Wellington Wildcats.
