A couple of years ago, Kurt Zaporozan said he came to the conclusion he liked serving his community. "I love Coquitlam - born and raised here," he said. "I see some discrepancies how council is going about business now. They're all pro-residents and kind of dismissing business coming into Coquitlam." Small business runs this province, he argued, and local owners need to be treated better.
What makes Zaporozan different from other candidates, he said, is that he's independent. "I have a pretty good perspective about what's going on in Coquitlam," he said. Zaporozan moved to Alberta in the 1980s and returned after five years. He's not door-knocking because he has two jobs but plans to lobby for support from business owners.
Seniors' care is on his platform, as is the business taxation rate. "Coquitlam is the third highest in the province and that's what scares me," he said, noting neighbouring cities are faring better. "Coquitlam is missing out completely."
Zaporozan believes some of Riverview's buildings should be left alone "just for the sake of the architecture" but others should be torn down to create a new mental health facility.
