KEVIN STARTIN

Age: 39

Occupation: math teacher

Coquitlam resident: 33 years

Campaign funding: self

Current city committees: none

Council meetings attended this year: none

Kevin Startin has no groups backing him for his first run at a civic seat and that doesn't concern him. "The citizens of Coquitlam will endorse me," said Startin, a member of the Coquitlam Field Sport Association, which is not supporting him. Startin also isn't taking any campaign contributions "to avoid me being beholden to others." He put his name forward to effect change in the city: Red tape at city hall is on his platform and he wants to "trim down the waste" to provide better - or more - services.

Startin describes himself as a "pretty unique" candidate. "My life doesn't revolve around me being a candidate so my ego isn't dependent on winning or losing, which makes me pretty unique in politics." Being a busy father of two elementary school students and rebuilding a house, Startin said he hasn't had time to door knock.

If elected, Startin plans to make Coquitlam affordable by curbing costs and ensuring services are at the right price - or need to be offered.

Riverview Hospital, he said, should serve as a mixed-community site that would include mental health care as well as market housing.
