Bike to Work Week gets underway in Coquitlam

With dark and rainy weather upon the region, it is important for drivers and cyclists to be more aware of each other during their daily commute.

With dark and rainy weather upon the region, it is important for drivers and cyclists to be more aware of each other during their daily commute.

That is the message from Jack Trumley, a spokesperson for the Tri-Cities branch for HUB (formerly the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition), which is encouraging cyclists to participate in Bike to Work Week next week.

"The weather is always a difficult issue," Trumley said. "People who bike and people who don't bike need to watch out for each other when they are on the road."

There is no reason people can't cycle year round, he added, but those who pedal to and from work in the fall and winter months need to take certain precautions.

Helmets are an obvious safety requirement - and required by law - but some riders may not know the importance of having proper tires, gloves and eye protection.

Reflective clothing and lights are a must no matter what the lighting conditions and riders should always dress appropriately and be prepared for sudden changes in the weather, Trumley said.

"Despite the weather, you can get out there," he said. "It's all about awareness."

Cyclists will have the chance to learn more about the benefits of pedal-powered transportation when Coquitlam hosts a commuter station for Bike to Work Week.

The event will be the only Bike to Work Week function in the Tri-Cities and will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 30, between 7 and 9 a.m. at Foster Avenue and Poirier Street. Cap's Westwood Cycle is sponsoring the commuter station and those who swing by will have a chance to win a one-on-one mechanics course worth more than $100.
