The man charged in connection with killing a student from Coquitlam’s Pinetree Secondary School will be in court tomorrow (March 15).
Kane Carter, 26, is set to be in Vancouver Provincial Court for a bail hearing.
He stands accused of the second-degree murder Alfred Wong, as well as Kevin Whiteside, in Vancouver in January 2018.
Carter, who has no criminal history in B.C., is also charged with aggravated assault and discharging a firearm with the intent to harm.
Vancouver Police said Carter was arrested last week in Ontario.
Wong was hit with a stray bullet while travelling in the back seat of his parents’ vehicle in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood on Jan. 13, 2018.
The 15-year-old student died from his injuries two days later.
Police say Whiteside, 23, was believed to have been in the area to shoot a rival, Matthew Navas-Rivas, at a restaurant.
A member of the Brothers Keepers gang, Navas-Rivas was unhurt in the shooting; however, he was killed seven months later in Vancouver in an unrelated incident.
In a statement provided by VPD, the Wong family said they’re grateful for the officers' commitment to their son's case.
"We are optimistic that all those involved in the crime will be brought to justice," their letter reads.
"We hope that Alfred’s death will be a catalyst for change in combating gang violence in the Greater Vancouver Area and that going forward there will be no more similar incidents."
