For years, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam residents have stepped up to the plate in ensuring their communities are safe.
Every now and then, a group of dedicated volunteers will be seen out and about helping local police from speed radar to outreach booths.
RCMP is now taking in applications for spring recruitment to its community police teams and for some that may be on the fence, a virtual information session is set for Thursday (Feb. 17) in explaining the various programs.
"Coquitlam RCMP's community and crime prevention programs are based on the belief that police can only be effective when engaged, informed citizens get involved in the safety of their homes, businesses and neighbourhoods," the initiative's description reads, noting residents of young and old can join the roster.
"So whether you are a young adult considering a career in law enforcement; a retiree looking for a way to use your skills and experience to give back to your community; a recent immigrant wanting to meet new people and get to know your new home; or just someone who wants to help the police create safer, healthier neighbourhoods the Coquitlam RCMP has volunteer opportunities that will help you reach your goals while supporting the police working to reduce crime and enhance public safety."
The online webinar is set to introduce prospective volunteers to the following squads:
- Speed watch
- Citizens' crime watch
- Block watch
- Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam Community Police stations
- Bike patrol, graffiti removal, special events, front office positions, etc.
Officers and experts are set to explain each initiative's role and benefits, as well as the time commitment needed to participate.
A question-and-answer period is scheduled to follow the presentation set for Thursday at 7 p.m.
The application deadline is March 7 for the community police team's spring recruitment with other opportunities to follow in the summer and fall.
