For a second straight year, lights are set to guide the Tri-Cities towards awareness on issues facing young women.

On Tuesday (Feb. 22), three key landmarks across Coquitlam and Port Moody are adding a shade of blue to empower girls as part of what's now known as World Thinking Day.

The new annual initiative encourages "international friendship" in recognizing the struggles of girls and women around the globe, such as inequality, access to education and others.

The Lafarge Lake fountain in Town Centre Park, the columns along Pinetree Way and Port Moody city hall will be among more than 100 B.C. structures and facilities that will light up blue in solidarity with local Girl Guides.

Additionally, the organization is encouraging local residents to show their support by adding blue lights of any kind to their home.

"Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Guiding is going strong in British Columbia with thousands of girls enrolled in our Girl Guide programs," explains Diamond Isinger, Provincial Commissioner of the Girl Guides of Canada.

"With in-person activities, outdoor adventure days to learn camp skills, special events exploring the arts, online science workshops, and more, girls are connected to the sisterhood of Guiding and accessing the positive support that they need now more than ever."

Isinger adds there are 10 million Guiding members around the world.

Notable landmarks that will also shine blue on Tuesday include BC Place, the Olympic cauldron in Vancouver, Science World, the B.C. legislature and Mr. PG.
