District 3 Firebirds right fielder Mark Sokolnicki stretches out to try to nab a line drive by Team Quebec batter Shai Borbeiy in the fifth inning of their Canadian Intermediate Little League Championship match at Coquitlam's Mackin Park.

Until Dec. 31, the Tri-City News looks back on some of our favourite photos from 2024.

Each day, we are posting one image along with commentary about what it took to get that photo and the story it conveys.

There may not be crying in baseball. But there is guessing when you’re shooting it.

If a runner is on first base, you can make a pretty good guess there might be a subsequent play at second base. If a batter is left-handed, you can guess he might pull a hit to the shortstop or third baseman.

After that, though, the sport is a bit of a crapshoot to get your lens in position to capture something that might happen.

So it was with some measure of satisfaction I was able to guess a hitter at the Little League Intermediate Canadian championships at Mackin Park in Coquitlam might spray the ball to right field and be able to capture this frame of the right fielder diving to try to catch it.

Alas, I didn’t have the same kind of luck with the lottery ticket I bought on my way home later.
