More than 60 people were caught in Coquitlam RCMP CounterAttack road checks throughout the summer.
Of the 61 drivers who were caught in July and August, two are facing criminal charges and four were given an administrative driving prohibition. Cpl. Jamie Chung said ADPs are issued if police intend to charge a driver criminally for impaired driving "but by the time they get back to the office he is not blowing high enough but is showing severe symptoms."
Another 18 drivers were given 24-hour roadside suspensions.
Ten drivers received three-day suspensions (blowing in the "warn" level once in five years), five were handed seven-day suspensions (blowing a warn twice in five years) and one person received a 30-day suspension (getting a warn more than twice in five years).
Another 21 drivers were handed 90-day suspensions, which happens when a person blows in the "fail" range (higher than .08 blood alcohol content) or refuses to blow into the breathalyzer, Chung said.
"Deaths and injuries caused by drunk driving are devastating and yet completely preventable," said Cpl. Neil Roemer of the Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services unit. "All it really takes is a little bit of pre-planning for a safe ride home if you're going to drink."
