Past, present and future transportation modes in Port Moody - by sea, rail and soon, rapid transit - is the theme for this year's Community Banner Painting Festival, happening this weekend at Port Moody city hall.
The annual event will see artists and volunteers create colourful banners on Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
More than 60 designs were submitted for the banner festival with 30 chosen, said PoMo public art co-ordinator Kristin Tracey.
The finished works will be on display at city hall until Jan. 30 before being installed along Murray Street and Ioco Road from April to November.
The Community Banner Painting Festival is part of the city's StreetArts program, which includes painted public works vehicles, garbage cans, stylized tree grates and street furniture.
PAINTER DEMO
Oil painter Linda Frimer will speak about her artwork in Port Coquitlam next week.
The Vancouver artist, who is known for her commemorative, educational and cultural pieces, will demonstrate her skill as part of a monthly gathering by the PoCo-based Art Focus Artists' Association, on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at The Outlet (2253 Leigh Sq., behind PoCo city hall) at 7 p.m.

POCO PUSH
Two Port Coquitlam residents are in a production at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival this and next month.
Riverside secondary graduate Ryan Scramstad and Christopher Fader, an Archbishop Carney grad, are part of Qualia, which is being put on by CoAT (Centre of A Tangle).
The group is made up of cohorts of the first bachelor of performing arts degree offered by Capilano University and Douglas, Langara and Vancouver Community colleges.
Qualia is translated as "an unfamiliar term for something that could not be more familiar; the way things seem to us."
The show runs from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. at the Progress Lab 1422 (1422 Williams St., Vancouver).

WALL SPACE
Artists looking to exhibit their work at Coquitlam's Place des Arts next year now have until March to submit their entries.
The Maillardville centre recently extended its deadline to Sunday, March 3 to consider 2D and 3D media and techniques (fibre arts, pottery, sculpture, painting, photography, prints and drawings); multimedia pieces are not being considered at this time.
