A civic seal used to mark official documents at the train station. A Remington standard typewriter. And a ballot box that saw votes cast for politicians who shaped the city.
All three items helped to run Port Moody in and around 1913 - the year the city was born. And now, the Port Moody Arts Centre - the place where municipal policies and procedures once came to be - wants to recognize the artifacts in an art show as part of the city's centennial celebrations this year.
PMAC is calling on artists to submit their interpretations of the three objects - be it in painting, sculpture, drawing or mixed media - for a display running March 21 to April 21.
The exhibit will also play a role during a re-enactment of the first city council meeting in 1913, happening on April 7, 2013.
Artists who want to be part of the centennial show can submit their ideas by Friday, Jan. 25 to PMAC gallery co-ordinator Susan Jessop at [email protected]. Candidates are asked to provide their contact details, resume and artist statement for their proposal, plus up to five jpeg images.
The pieces shouldn't be more than 10" deep, 20" tall and 20" wide; they will be placed in the show beside the artifacts as part of the Cabinet of Curiosity series.
Successful applicants will be contacted next month; artists will have until March 15 to finish their work. Artists will also receive $100 and retain their piece after the exhibit.
