The warm weather and sandy beaches of Hawaii may seem like a long way away right now.

But the city of Coquitlam has a new music class that will get participants swaying their hips and saying “mahalo.”

Adults can sign up for a ukulele beginners’ class at the Glen Pine Pavilion, the seniors’ centre south of city hall.

Running Nov. 10 to Dec. 1, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., attendees will learn basic chords and strums. No experience is needed; however, participants are asked to bring their own instrument.

Safety protocols to meet the provincial health officer’s order for social distancing are in place for the class.

Also, Coquitlam residents planning a trip to Mexico — after the pandemic ends — can get ready with Spanish-language instruction, also at Glen Pine.

Beginner Spanish runs from Nov. 12 to Dec. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. while Spanish Beginner 2 is from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Spanish Conversation is offered from Nov. 13 to Dec. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m.

And, if you’re dreaming of swimming in warm waters, the city has a new class at the City Centre Aquatic Complex, starting Nov. 6.

Water running is a drop-in aquafit class that goes from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., and is open to all ages.
