Philosophers' Café is a series of informal public discussions in libraries, cafés and restaurants throughout Metro Vancouver. Open to everyone, have brought dialogue and discussion to thousands of people who are interested in exploring issues from the absurd to the sublime. On Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the board room at CPL's Poirier branch, moderator Amir Kamyabnejad will lead a discussion on "Children of modern society": What are the effects of today's fast-paced technology on children? Can we minimize the negative and enrich the positive consequences?

Life on Skid Road: A BC MLA Gets an Inside Look at Poverty: On Monday, Oct. 29 from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. in the Nancy Bennett Room at the Poirier branch, Jagrup Brar, an NDP MLA from Surrey will talk about his exercise in January of this year of living on $610 (the current welfare rate for a single, employable adult in B.C.) for one month in an attempt to draw attention to the issues of poverty and unemployment. Autumn Expo: Get a jump on Christmas shopping Saturday, Nov. 3 as Wilson Centre and Terry Fox Library present the Autumn Expo craft and book sale. Shoppers can load up on crafts, baked goods and one-of-a-kind finds while enjoying entertainment, refreshments, displays and demonstrations. There will be bargain prices on well-used and near-new books, with all book sale proceeds going to support programs and the collection at the Library. The expo runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wilson Centre, 2150 Wilson Ave., Port Coquitlam. The book sale will take place in the library meeting room at the same time. As well, there will be a second day of the book sale, Sunday, Nov. 4 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Get Published (TOMORROW): Learn how you can take your manuscript from first draft to published book at PMPL's interactive Get Published café. Local authors and an editor will answer questions about getting published and writing for a variety of ages and genres. This event is Saturday, Oct. 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. Phone the library at 604-469-4577 to reserve your free space.

Keep your Heritage Language Alive: Does your family speak a heritage language? Help your child stay in touch with their roots with PMPL's Links to Language Multilingual Kits. Each kit contains 10 pre-school-level books and a CD/DVD in one of five heritage languages: Chinese, Korean, Farsi, Spanish and French. An included resource manual provides tips on building early literacy skills in both English and the target language.

Email Tips (registration required): On Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., you can get tips on how to manage your web-based email account (Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail), set up folders, send attachments, create a contacts list and more. You will need an email account prior to class.
