Metro Vancouver may get one last little winter storm Sunday night, March 16.
Unsettled conditions could lead to lightning and thunder tonight, says Environment Canada meteorologist Louis Kohanyi, while below-normal low temperatures could lead to wet flurries at higher elevations.
"There's a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms today and tonight," Kohanyi tells V.I.A.
The risk of thunderstorms covers the Metro Vancouver region, he adds. While thunder and lightning are possible, only about 10 mm of precipitation is expected by Monday morning.
Meanwhile, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Maple Ridge, and other parts of northern Metro Vancouver could experience a few wet snowflakes falling overnight.
"It is still winter," notes Kohanyi.
Vancouver forecast for the next week
As dramatic as the forecast is for the next 24 hours in Vancouver, the forecast for the rest of the week isn't.
"Tomorrow is going to see a chance of showers in the morning," says Kohanyi. "Late in the day, that's when there'll be a ridge of high pressure building."
That ridge will bring a break in the clouds, he explains, with a mix of sun and clouds Monday afternoon.
While the expected high is 9 C, the overnight low will drop to 1 C in the city and 0 C at higher elevations. The lack of clouds means it'll get quite cold for this time of year, Kohanyi explains.
Tuesday will likely be the nicest day of the week, with a ridge of high pressure in place. That'll keep skies clear during the day, though the high will again be around 9 C.
More rain coming
Clouds will return Tuesday night as a new system slowly makes its way to Vancouver. Wednesday will be cloudy as well, with showers during the day and up to 20 mm of rain falling in the evening and overnight.
Highs are expected to be around 10 C and lows around 5 C.
Thursday a bit of a break is expected, as the Wednesday system moves on. However, by Thursday night a new, more powerful system will arrive.
"Thursday, I would expect a chance of showers in Vancouver," says Kohanyi. "And then we have rain in the forecast for Thursday night and Friday."
About 30 or 40 mm is expected from Thursday night to Friday night.
Into next weekend, showers are expected Saturday and periods of rain next Sunday, March 22. While the weekend is forecast to be wet, temperatures are predicted to be higher, with highs around 12 C and lows around 5 C.
