In an unassuming shed on the evergreen slopes above Roberts Creek, weaver and entrepreneur Pam Magee is doing more than producing heirloom fabrics on century-old looms. Magee is also pulling strings to patch Canada’s reputation among the world’s textile-producing nations.

A cedar weaver from the shíshálh Nation is restoring ceremonial regalia that was confiscated and destroyed in an attempt to sever ties to tradition.

Sherry Yoon is the sole nominee from B.C. for the national Siminovitch Prize. The artistic director of Vancouver’s Boca Del Lupo theatre company has also worked as a freelance director with organizations like Bard on the Beach and National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

The announcement was made during the 50th anniversary celebrations of the program's original broadcast, held on Oct. 1 at Molly's Reach in Gibsons.

Pat John, a member of the shíshálh Nation who gained international stardom in the role of Jesse Jim on the long-running The Beachcombers television series, died on Wednesday, July 13, at a relative’s house in his hometown of Sechelt.
