It’s a process where the idea of returning to normalcy feels anything but normal.

Instead, it’s empowering, life-affirming and most importantly, provides much-needed closure.

Eagle Ridge Hospital’s Areola Tattoo Clinic is the only clinic of its kind in British Columbia that provides women with free areola tattoo services.

Areola tattooing is the final procedure in the reconstructive journey, symbolizing a significant milestone for breast cancer survivors. Beyond its physical significance, this transformative process fosters feelings of healing and confidence, marking a profound emotional milestone after a battle with breast cancer.

“It was the missing piece for me before I could feel completely healed,” says tattoo recipient Gen. “Being able to have my areola tattooed and looking closer to what it looked before my surgery ties back into that feeling of relief.”

Over the past decade, thousands of patients have benefited from this transformative treatment, completely funded by Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. The Areola Tattoo Clinic relies solely on donations to operate – every day contributions make a significant impact, ensuring that breast cancer survivors can access these tattoo services at no cost for years to come.

Like Gen, Isabel also had the procedure done in order to bookend her cancer journey. The fact that it was free and a straightforward undertaking alleviated any stress she felt.

“It was such a positive thing to know that I was at the end of my battle and it certainly made me feel more comfortable with my body,” Isabel says.

The procedures are performed by Sandi Saunier, who has overseen the program since its inception in 2012. Saunier is a registered nurse with specialized training in administering the tattoos, which are completed in a single day using pain-alleviating cream for comfort.

“It’s allowed me to help thousands of patients get through their journeys with breast cancer. Future donations will allow me to continue to take care of patients all across British Columbia who need my services,” Saunier says.

The Foundation serves as the primary fundraising wing for Eagle Ridge Hospital, which is located in the second-fastest growing community within the Fraser Health Authority. It serves those living across Port Moody, Anmore, Belcarra, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

Beyond the tattoo clinic, the Foundation also raises funds to bolster other vital health care programs that assist the residents of the community.

Programs such as Hearing for Kids provides hearing aids for kids from families in need between the ages of five and 19. This program helps subsidize the cost of hearing aids and fittings, which together can cost thousands of dollars.

Meanwhile, the Hopes and Dreams program assists residents at the Connelly, Cypress and Cottonwood Lodges on the former Riverview lands in developing coping mechanisms to enhance their overall quality of life as they work towards independent living.
