A burst of international flavours and community engagement come together in celebration of different cultures and traditions.

When you hear names like mandus, baos, pierogies, momos, raviolis, wontons, jiaozis and gyozas—there's no denying there's a commonality among these delectable morsels. Sure, your mouth starts to water in anticipation because they're all delicious doughs stuffed with sweet or savory fillings, but that's not all.

They're also just some of the tasty global offerings you can expect among the 17 dumpling vendors at this year's BC Dumpling Festival at Coquitlam's Town Centre Park on August 10 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., presented by the non-profit Asian Arts and Culture Society.

A burst of international flavours and community engagement come together in celebration of different cultures and traditions, with a focus on diversity and culinary excellence from local chefs and vendors. You'll experience a sense of unity and shared understanding through the festival’s activities, performances, and culinary offerings.

A family-friendly event, the BC Dumpling Festival will open with a special celebration of Filipino heritage, which sets the tone for a vibrant and multicultural festival experience.

"We have an exciting lineup of Filipino performances on stage, showcasing traditional music, dance, and art," says Gina Chong, president, Asian Arts and Culture Society.

"Additionally, there will be a Filipino pavilion featuring cultural displays and activities, as well as delicious Filipino food vendors, including the unique purple ube siopao (naturally sweet purple yam) by Mr. Siopao De Langley."

Fusion of global eats

Mr. Siopao De Langley joins an exceptional array of new vendors this year: Onigiri Ya, Teppan-Yaro, That Momo Spot Authentic Himalayan Dumplings, Little Saigon, Sharbat (Middle Eastern dumplings) and Pastaggio.

Returning crowd pleasers include: Momo Joy, Nina's Pierogies, Dungan House, Sun Star Restaurant, Morgan's Harbour Jamaican Patties, Chef Tony Dim Sum, Nadri Korean Food, House of Yee Fine Foods, K-IPSE Mandoo & Frozen Food and Jiaozi.

These vendors highlight the universal appeal and cultural variations of dumplings worldwide. Chong's personal favourite is the traditional Korean mandu, filled with a blend of pork, tofu, and vegetables. "It reminds me of family gatherings and the comfort of homemade meals."

Don't miss the fun and engaging dumpling eating contest, where you'll catch local politicians, sponsors and community leaders battle it out in a friendly competition to devour dumplings.

"This contest is a great way to highlight the festive atmosphere and bring people together through a shared love of dumplings," Chong says.

Community engagement, sponsors

Attendance is estimated to hit over 50,000 visitors, up from 40,000 in 2023, when over 30,000 dumplings were sold. "The city's strong sense of community and support for inclusive activities ensures that the festival will be well-received and attended," acknowledges Chong.

"Our festival’s success is deeply rooted in the generous support of our sponsors, whose contributions make this event possible," Chong adds. "A heartfelt thank you to Marcon Homes, RBC, Onni Group, and all our valued sponsors for their essential role in bringing our vision to life.
