World's neglect led to Ebola outbreak

Re. "Fraser hospitals are screening for ebola" (The Tri-City News, Oct. 3).

What hypocrisy from our medical health officer to say ebola risk is low but some infections are expected.

The patient in Texas went to hospital, stated he was from West Africa and staff sent him home with antibiotics.

In Canada, we can't even prevent infections in our hospitals every day and people end up sick from secondary infections. Crowded hospitals and overworked staff already delay looking after people coming to emergency wards. This is a disaster in the making.

And it all could have been prevented if the world community had built a centre for disease control in Africa to look after this disease. It would also have given work and expertise to Africans and a place for world scientist to go to study the disease instead of transporting it to other countries to investigate.

But, no, as usual Africans are discriminated against and ignored until now it is a potential world epidemic. Shame.
