Re. "Falcon concerned about referendum delay for transit" (The Tri-City News, Nov. 7).

Isn't it amazing that Kevin Falcon, like Saul on the road to Damascus, has finally seen the light? Transit is much too important to be subjected to a referendum - he really means it, bless his gentle soul. One assumes it is because he now uses transit frequently to go to work.

Talking about transit referendums, does anybody in the BC Liberal government and at TransLink pay attention to the numerous referendums or propositions about transit that Seattle residents have had the pleasure to vote on? They just agreed on a city car-tab fee and an extra 0.1% on sales tax to boost Metro bus service.

Is anybody listening in Victoria?

By the way, the Sound Transit board is made of elected members of the region's counties and municipalities, plus the state secretary of transportation. This is a common set-up, with local tweaking, in many cities, be they in North America, Europe, etc.

As well, Sound Transit's 15-member volunteer Citizen Oversight Panel oversees and monitors the implementation of its voter-approved regional transit plan and provides ongoing review.

Oversight also includes the U.S. Department of Transportation, which monitors the progress of Sound Transit projects that receive federal grant funding.
