The Editor,
Most people agree we need to improve our roads, bridges and transit throughout Vancouver. How to pay for them is obviously the challenge.
Although I respect most of our mayors, they have proved they are unable to work together time and time again. To make matters worse they have refused to agree to use property taxes to fund major projects. They obviously want to keep these for their own taxation purposes.
Property taxes are the only fair way to spread the huge construction costs evenly to everyone in Metro Vancouver. All property owners would benefit from better transportation whether they drive a car or not. Landlords would also pass on a small amount of the additional tax to each of their tenants, who would also benefit.
We need region wide planning for all transportation to avoid the Vancouver versus Surrey and Coquitlam versus New Westminster situations that exist now.
