The Editor,

Re. "Clay & Royer to face off in PoMo" (The Tri-City News, Sept. 5).

The civic elections are less than two months away. In my city, Port Moody, only 5,452 votes were cast for the mayor's position in the last election. Wow, did we pay the price for such apathy. Only 3,112 votes got us a mayor who recently told the newspapers the city should just "shut" the OCP so that developers can "get on with it." Why spend more time trying to make sure that we get it right and end up with a delightful and livable city?

As taxpayers, we owe the developers and land speculators diddly-squat. As citizens, we owe the democratic process and our city much, much more.

Isn't it worth doing some research to find someone who does care that we get it right and then vote for that person?

Do we want someone who just shakes hands, opens fire halls and reviews parades? Would you prefer someone who would shake things up in council and inspire achieving something more?

We already know what the current version of the OCP has done to property values. The document that Mayor Mike Cay says is only a visioning document has already gone way beyond that. It stands to create some isolated, significant riches for a very select few land holders. Growth makes that inevitable for sure but at what price? Dollars instead of something wonderful and worthy?

Come on, challengers, tell us what you stand for.

George Elgstrand,

Port Moody
