LETTER: 1-800 line to report bears is little help, says Coquitlam resident

The Editor, I am curious whether any of your readers have phoned the 1-800- bear report number and had a satisfactory response.

The Editor,

I am curious whether any of your readers have phoned the 1-800- bear report number and had a satisfactory response.

The first time we phoned - to report that there had been a bear cub up one of our trees for quite some time - the woman answering chastised us for planting a red oak tree, saying it was our fault we had a bear in our tree.

Today, we phoned because of a very serious situation. My husband requires critical home nursing care several times each week. The nurse arrived to find a bear rummaging through our blue box just outside our back porch and, quite understandably, she refused to attempt an entry into our home.

When my husband called the bear report line, it was the same old gas - obviously the responsibility for getting rid of the bear is ours, according to the individual who answered the bear report line.

What in the world are these people prepared to do to help homeowners who have a serious bear problem?

Nothing, it seems.
