The Editor,
Re. "Public gets say in gondola proposal to Burnaby Mtn." (The Tri-City News, May 11).
I'm perplexed by how TransLink can find $70 million or more for this tourist attraction cable car to SFU but is unable, over a decade, to find the cash to build the Evergreen Line.
The proponents of the cable car claim that service time to and from SFU will be improved. I suggest that total door-to-door trip times may be longer by cable car.
The proponents claim that operating costs will be reduced as bus operations are scaled back. I suggest that continuation of local community bus services both within SFU campus and in the residential neighbourhoods at the foot of Burnaby Mountain will offset most of the alleged cost savings.
Finally, I would expect cable car users to pay a surcharge for this deluxe service, just as YVR transit users do for the Canada Line.
