The COVID-19 pandemic is now affecting dog lovers in the Tri-Cities.
Coquitlam announced effective immediately it was shutting down all fenced off-leash dog parks in the city to ensure safe social distancing.
“While most members of the community are following the measures ordered by B.C.’s provincial health office, city officials continue to observe people congregating in groups and others failing to use appropriate personal hygiene measures,” the city said in a statement Monday afternoon. “These actions put our entire community at risk.”
The city has been closing services at a rapid pace since the COVID-19 pandemic began to grip the region.
With the closure of the dog parks today, the city has now shut down all indoor facilities as well as playgrounds, sports fields, sports courts, skateparks and washrooms.
So what can people do with their dogs while the parks are off limits?
The city said the best way to exercise your pet is to take them for a walk on a leash in your neighbourhood.
“Outdoor exercise is important for physical and mental health for you and your pet,” the city said in the press release. “Considering the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic and the measures required to contain the virus, including closing dog parks, the best way to exercise your dog is walking on leash in neighbourhoods, open park spaces and trails. Be sure to maintain a social distance of two metres (or six feet) from others at all times."
SOCIAL DISTANCING TIPS
The city also suggests other ways of practising safe social distancing, including:
• staying home;
• limiting activities outside your home, for example only getting groceries once per week;
• use online options to connect with others;
• keep your hands at your side when possible;
• stay home when you are sick;
• cough into your sleeve or elbow;
• and avoid all social activities in large gatherings.
