An organization that supports people affected by dementia has cancelled its biggest fundraiser of the year because of the COVID-19 crisis.

But the Alzheimer Society of B.C. wants its supporters and donors to circle May 3 on their calendars for a "retooled" benefit event.

Today (Tuesday), the charity announced it would be unable to host its annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimers that takes place in some two dozen communities including in Coquitlam.

Last year’s gathering at Town Centre Park generated more than $18,000 for the cause, said spokesperson Freya Tomren.

“Our first priority is the safety of our participants, staff, volunteers and their family and friends,” the society’s resource development director Cathryn France said in a news release. “The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is our biggest fundraising event of the year and the funds raised allow us to provide critical programs and services."

"We are committed to coming together and having this event go ahead in a different way, perhaps virtually," she said. "Please stay tuned for more information but keep May 3 free in your calendar.”

The decision to cancel the walk was the result of the latest recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Canada and the BC Centre for Disease Control.

While the society has also postponed its in-person programs and services because of the global pandemic, it is increasing its phone outreach via support calls.

As well, it has permanently extended the hours of its First Link Dementia Helpline from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. for English-speaking residents; the Mandarin, Cantonese and Punjabi support will continue to be available between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday:

• English: 1-800-936-6033

• Cantonese and Mandarin: 1-833-674-5007

• Punjabi: 1-833-674-5003
