Smoking in Coquitlam parks could get you a hefty fine this summer.
The city is reminding residents that penalties increase from the normal $150 to $500 during the warmer months due to the heightened fire risk.
“Don’t let our parks go up in smoke,” the city said in a press release this week, adding: “All residents and park visitors should take precautions against accidental fires and be alert to signs of fire.”
Throwing cigarette butts on the ground or out of a car window could also lead to a separate $150 fine, according to the Smoking Control Bylaw.
Enforcement officers will be ramping up their patrols over the next few months. To report a complaint, call 604-927-7387 or call 604-927-3085. You can also email [email protected].
If anyone sees a fire, they should call 911 immediately.
