Teams from British Columbia climbed every step of the podium at the Canadian Ball Hockey Association’s junior national championships that concluded Sunday at Coquitlam’s Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.
The boys U15 TeamBC Wolverines won gold, defeating the Newfoundland Selects, 1-0 in overtime, in their final. Jesse Kennett scored the winning goal 9:20 into extra time.
The Wolverines won five of the six games they played in the tournament. Their only loss was to the Edmonton Yeti, 2-1, in the preliminary round.
The boys U17 TeamBC Thunder also stood atop the podium, after they beat New Tecumseh Xtreme, from Ontario, 3-1 in their championship final.
Vincent Timperio, Austin Ungurean and David Stepputat scored goals for the winners, while Evan Jonsen backstopped the victory in net.
The boys U19 TeamBC Express only got as high as the podium’s second level, as they were defeated in their final, 3-1, by the New Tecumseh Xtreme.
Chayson Dosanjh scored the only goal for the Express, which had finished the preliminary round undefeated in three games and also won its elimination round game, 3-2, over Edmonton Xtreme.
TeamBC Express won bronze in the girls U19 division, after they defeated the Team Manitoba Amazons, 6-1.
Sydney Payment scored twice for the Express, while Jenna Proulx, Emma Tait, Julia Farkasch and Aish Sander added singles.
The Express finished the preliminary round in fourth place, with two wins, a tie and a loss. They were then defeated in the semifinals, 3-0, by Team Ontario Red.
