Tri-City golfers 1-2-3 at jr. girls BC's

It wasn't as easy as one-two-three. It just looked that way for Tri-City shooters at the B.C. Junior Girls Golf Championship last week at Eaglepoint Resort in Kamloops.

It wasn't as easy as one-two-three. It just looked that way for Tri-City shooters at the B.C. Junior Girls Golf Championship last week at Eaglepoint Resort in Kamloops.

Coquitlam's Jennifer Yang fired a two-under-par 70 Friday to successfully defend her crown of a year ago.

Yang carded a birdie and an eagle on the front nine to make the turn at three-under-par. She then slipped up with two bogeys before managing a birdie on the 16th hole to finish up the tournament with an incredible overall score of eight-under 280.

"Heading into the tournament I wasn't sure how I would do because many of the other girls have been playing really well," said the 17-year-old Yang, who will next attempt to qualify for the US. Women's Amateur tournament. "I just concentrated on my own shots and, with a couple holes left, I knew I was going to win. I'm pretty excited."

Finishing the tournament three-strokes back in second place was national development team member Jisoo Keel, also of Coquitlam. Keel finished three strokes back of Yang at five-under 283.

In third place at four-under 284 was Port Coquitlam's Soo-Bin Kim, whose final round of five-under 67 was the low score of the day. First-round leader Megan Osland of Kelowna struggled on the day and slipped back to finish in fourth at even-par 288.

Rounding out the top five were Taylor Kim of Surrey. Also a member of the national development team with Keel, Kim shot two-over-par 290 at the event.

The Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship will be held Aug. 1-5 in Richmond. The Tri-City trio of Yang, Keel and Kim will be on the B.C. team.
