For the first time in several years, Friday’s annual Coquitlam Cup showdown between the Tri-Cities’ senior high school football teams should be a competitive game with possible implications to determine who they'll face in the playoffs.
The Terry Fox Ravens will be looking to put the exclamation mark on a perfect regular season after the fourth-ranked squad defeated WJ Mouat 39-0 last Friday in Abbotsford.
Calib Gruninger scored a pair of touchdowns, while Alex Gagnon, Cameron Neal and Jacob Brass also crossed Mouat’s goal line to power Fox’s sixth straight regular season win. Kicker Seb Cuesta was also successful on all five of his point-after conversions.
Centennial, meanwhile, improved its regular season record to four wins and two losses after thumping Mission 34-6 last Friday afternoon at Percy Perry Stadium. Running back Ziad Sabry led the Centaurs to its third straight win with two touchdowns, while fellow backfielder Tamani Duncan, receiver Jesseo Kim and quarterback Malcolm Cameron also scored majors.
With last year’s Coquitlam Cup a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic, the last time the two teams played each other was 2019 when the Ravens had just one win to its name heading into the game, and the Centaurs were winless.
Game time Friday is 7 p.m. at Percy Perry Stadium.
The Terry Fox and Centennial junior varsity teams play for the Dan Doyle Cup on Thursday, 3 p.m., at the Centennial Oval.
