The Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs are returning to the Minto Cup national junior lacrosse championship for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
The Adanacs outscored the Victoria Shamrocks 6-1 in the second period Saturday afternoon at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex to spark a 14-7 win, clinching the BC Junior Lacrosse League title four games to one.
After each team scored four times in the first period and exchanged goals in the first three minutes of the second, the Adanacs scored six straight to carry a 10-5 lead into the final frame.
Austin Ducommun led Coquitlam’s attack with three goals and four assists, while Stuart Phillips had a five point night. By the end of the game, 14 Adanacs had registered at least one point.
Jack Kask stopped 32 of the 39 shots he faced in Coquitlam’s net, while his teammates 53 at Victoria goalies Adam Bland and Daniel Ramage.
The Minto Cup is being played in Edmonton from Aug. 21 – 28. Aside from the Adanacs, the round-robin tournament will be contested by the host Edmonton Miners, and Calgary Mountaineers of the Rocky Mountain Junior A Lacrosse League and the winner of the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League final between the Burlington Blaze and the Orangeville Northmen. That best of seven series is currently tied 1-1.
The Adanacs last won a national championship in 2018 when the team defeated the Brampton Excelsiors 3 games to one in a best of five finale.
