Coquitlam Express fall 4-2 to high-flying Surrey Eagles

A pair of power play goals by the Surrey Eagles cost the Coquitlam Express in a 4-2 loss Friday at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex.

After exchanging goals in the first period, Surrey’s Ryden Evers took advantage of the extra man to give the visitors a 2-1 lead early in the second period, just 23 seconds after Coquitlam’s  Luke Vardy was assessed a minor penalty for hooking.

The Eagles went up 3-1 with 1:46 into the third period when Caden Cranston beat Express goalie Adam Manji as teammate Michael Rubin served two minutes for interference.

Kye Benoche managed to get the home team to within a goal with his first of the season 14:25 into the third period but the Eagles sealed its seventh win in seven games with an empty net goal by Ryan Schelling.

The loss was the fourth in regulation time for Coquitlam, which also has a shootout loss and two wins.

Manji faced 39 shots in the Express net while his teammates fired 37 shots at Surrey goalie Ajeet Gundarah.

Coquitlam hosts the Chilliwack Chiefs on Sunday, 3 p.m. at Poirier.
