The Greater Vancouver Comets are a step closer to the Esso Cup after the Coquitlam-based team defeated the Fraser Valley Rush Saturday at Planet Ice to win the Female Midget AAA hockey championship in two straight games.
The Comets followed up a 3-0 win in Friday’s best-of-three series opener, in which Coquitlam’s Kaitlyn Daly earned the shutout, with a 2-1 overtime win in game two. Jenn Gardiner, of Surrey, scored the winner.
Port Moody’s Jenna Buglioni, who recently commited to attend Ohio State beginning in 2020, opened the scoring in the second period, but with nine minutes remaining in regulation time, Fraser Valley’s Cassidy Wait tied it.
It’s the second straight provincial championship for the Comets, which will now play the winner of the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League to determine the representative for the Pacific region at the 2018 Esso Cup national championship that is being held in Bridgewater, N.S., April 22 to 28.
