Calling Port Coquitlam students in elementary school: the city needs you for its 101st May Days.

Children and youth are being sought for this year’s Royal Party or for a maypole dance team.

The festivities open on May 5 with the May Day parade happening on May 11.

Applications will be accepted online via the city’s website until Jan. 22 to join the fun; the royal party will be chosen through random draw on March 10.

To qualify for the royal party, flower girls and junior lancers must be in grades 1 and 2 while princesses and lancers must be in grades 4 and 5.

And entrants should be free on the following days this winter and spring:

  • Wednesdays and Fridays (starting Feb. 2)
    • hip hop dance practices
  • March 10
    • royal party selection
  • May 5
    • May Day rehearsal and opening ceremony
  • May 11
    • Rotary May Day parade

Meanwhile, Port Coquitlam kids in grades 3 to 5 can join their school’s maypole dance team; practices take place at the schools.

Last year’s centennial celebrations drew thousands of people for the Shaughnessy Street procession marshalled by Terry Fox’s brother, Darrell, and his family, and for the activities and entertainment afterwards at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre.

To apply for a May Days royal party or maypole dance spot by Jan. 22, you can visit the city’s website or email [email protected].
