BC Highway Patrol is urging motorists reconsider their travel plans, especially if they involve Highway 1 near the Port Mann Bridge.
Corp. Michael McLaughlin said several collisions and winter conditions on the highway have caused “extreme traffic delays,” especially eastbound through Coquitlam.
“If you’re a confident driver who is prepared for the snow, you need to slow down more than usual,” said McLaughlin in a news release. “If you’re not a confident driver, or your car isn’t winter ready, stay off the roads entirely. This isn’t your day.”
DriveBC webcams at the Brunette overpass show eastbound traffic on Highway 1 backed up from the Port Mann through Coquitlam to at least North Road.
The road report for the highway advises winter operations are occurring on the bridge until at least 2:00 p.m., necessitating the closure of the HOV lane.
Locally, the City of Port Coquitlam said crews are “diligently working to clear the roads and ensure safe travel” after additional snow fell overnight.
Port Moody has advised Tuesday waste collection will proceed as weather and road conditions permit, but may be delayed. Residents are asked to keep their garbage carts at the curb until 8 p.m.. Green waste will be collected next Tuesday, Feb. 11.
TransLink said SkyTrain and bus service across Metro Vancouver may experience delays because of the weather and road conditions.
"TransLink is encouraging customers to build extra travel time in their commute this morning," said an advisory.
School District 43 advises all schools are open, but if local conditions are a concern, parents can choose to keep their kids at home.
The Coquitlam campus of Douglas College is closed. And while buildings will remain open, in-person services like food, enrolment, the library and bookstore won't be available.
According to Environment Canada, wintry conditions with cold temperatures are expected to persist through the week, with more snow possible beginning Saturday night.
