A parliamentary committee that includes Coquitlam–Burke Mountain MLA Fin Donnelly is out with a report today (Dec. 12) on B.C.’s next merit commissioner.
And the special committee is unanimously recommending that David McCoy replace Maureen Baird, who was appointed for three years in January 2020.
An independent officer of the legislature, the merit commissioner is responsible for monitoring the application of the merit principle to public service appointments, as well as government practices, policies and standards to eligible dismissals.
McCoy has worked in B.C. and Alberta for the past 30 years, focusing on operations and human resource management.
Previously, he held leadership roles with B.C.’s health ministry, the BC Public Services Agency, BC Assessment and BC Transit; he also worked at the municipal level with the City of Edmonton, according to a release.
His most recent role is within the Office fo the Merit Commissioner.
"David McCoy brings a strong record of public sector experience, skills and knowledge and a passion for administrative fairness,” stated deputy committee chair Mike Morris, in the release.
“We are confident in his ability to provide effective leadership and continuity to this important independent position."
Besides Morris and Donnelly, the committee is made up of:
- Mike Starchuk, MLA, Surrey-Cloverdale (chair)
- Susie Chant, MLA, North Vancouver-Seymour
- Teresa Wat, MLA, Richmond North Centre
Their report will officially go before the legislature in the new year.
