Where did Port Coquitlam's Black Cat radar device go?

An RCMP policing device used to collect traffic data is missing from Port Coquitlam.

A policing device used to collect traffic data is missing from a Port Coquitlam pole.

And police are now asking for the public's help to find it.

According to a Coquitlam RCMP news released issued today, March 22, the Black Cat radar was installed on March 6, 2024, on a pole near the mailboxes on the southern side of Citadel Drive, near Kinsington Crescent, in PoCo.

The device anonymously gathers vehicle volumes and speeds so that police can understand traffic patterns in a neighbourhood, and address road safety concerns.

Mounties noticed the gear was missing yesterday, March 21, when they found the locks and mounting mechanism damaged.

The device was installed in response to complaints from the community concerned with speeding in their neighbourhood. said Staff Sgt. Mark McCutcheon, Coquitlam RCMP’s Traffic Services Commander, in the release.

The device helps us understand the concerns of our communities. The data collected helps us efficiently implement resources at peak times to address unsafe behaviours affecting the safety of our roadway.

Anyone who has information about the whereabouts of the Black Cat device or has video can contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550, quoting file number 2024-7185.
