What should go into Port Coquitlam's 50-year time capsule?

Where will you be in 50 years? Will PoCo's May Days celebration last another half century? Imagine the next generation opening this time capsule during May Days and marvelling at the items inside.

Items are sought for a time capsule that will be buried outside Port Coquitlam City Hall.

Port Coquitlam's 100th annual May Days celebration is well underway, with arts and cultural events all week and a big parade and party this weekend.

But with all those fun things going on, a more solemn gesture is also taking place to mark the historic nature of this iconic event.

A new community time capsule will be buried outside Port Coquitlam City Hall as part of this year’s May Day centennial celebrations, according to a city press release.

What should be in the time capsule?

Residents of all ages are being invited to submit items until June 15, 2023.

A wide variety of submissions are welcomed, including art, photographs, writing and small items.

The submissions may show why May Days and the city are special — or what people in the future should know about how much May Days and the city mean to the community.

Next generation will view the contents

The time capsule will be opened in 50 years in 2073.

PoCo Heritage Museum and Archives is coordinating the project in partnership with the City of Port Coquitlam.

Here are the submission requirements

  • All entries must include name, address, phone number, email address of the person who submitted the item, as well as an explanation of why the item should be included
  • Flat items such as artwork may be no larger than 8.5” x11”
  • Digital items will be accepted on a USB drive
  • Small items will be accepted, but please consider that there is limited space in the capsule

Submissions can be dropped of in person at the PoCo Heritage Museum and Archives. Hours are available at pocoheritage.org.

A selection committee will choose the entries for the time capsule following the submission period.

Winners will be posted at pocoheritage.org by Sept. 30, 2023.
