Organizers of the annual Mayor’s Croquet Tournament — the only fundraiser for the Port Coquitlam Community Foundation — hope to meet or beat last year’s total at next Thursday’s gathering.

The philanthropic group that supports non-profits in Port Coquitlam with grants reaped more than $50,000 in 2017, said Polly Krier who is planning the event for the third year.

And, with new corporate sponsorship on board from Wesbild and the Brilliant Circle Group as well as spectator ticket sales, she’s confident the charity will smash its target.

For $85, spectators can watch 16 teams battle for the title, enjoy two drinks and appetizers plus a barbecue meal fired up by Hopcott Premium Meats in Pitt Meadows.

The Giggle Dam will also whip up the crowd with entertainment and for the live auction, and guests can also try their hand at an extreme version of croquet, at the private waterfront property.

“It’s going to be more fun that ever,” Krier said, noting competition can often be fierce between the teams.

Like the players, spectators are asked to dress in white and wear a sunhat and study shoes.

Registration starts at noon with Mayor Greg Moore giving his opening remarks at 12:30 p.m. and the play starting at 1 p.m. The final “Golden Mallet Match” is at 5:15 p.m. followed by dinner, auction and awards. Croquet equipment will be supplied.
