Two separate car accidents in Coquitlam Thursday night put six people in hospital including an 18-year-old man who remained there with serious injuries Friday afternoon.
The first incident happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. when an 18-year-old Coquitlam man was hit by a car while skateboarding in the 1500 block of Parkway Boulevard near Panorama Drive, in a quiet residential area of North Coquitlam.
The man was reportedly wearing headphones and likely did not hear the car coming, Coquitlam RCMP told The Tri-City News.
The man was taken immediately to hospital where he remained late Friday with serious but still unspecified injuries.
The Mounties are not saying at this time whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash but noted that the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Parkway Boulevard was closed in both directions for several hours Thursday night and Friday morning between Salal Crescent and Rockridge Lane as Coquitlam Mounties continued their investigation.
Just 30 minutes after police were called to the Parkway motor-vehicle accident, Coquitlam RCMP responded to a major head-on crash involving four vehicles on Lougheed Highway between Barnet Highway and Dewdney Trunk Road.
Five people were taken from the scene to local hospitals with varying degrees of injuries, none of which appeared to be life-threatening.
Coquitlam Mounties told The News Friday that two of the injured were treated and released, two had more complex injuries, but only one remained in hospital late Friday afternoon.
Again, it is not known if speed or alcohol were a factor in this crash, said police, who were still investigating Friday.
Witnesses to either accident are asked to call the Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services Division at 604-945-1550.
