Two students in School District 43 (SD43) are among six Canadian youth to win $150 for their artwork promoting National Forest Week.
The annual contest by the FORED BC Society challenged students ages five to 18 to depict the theme of “Two-Eyed Seeing: Welcoming all knowledge to sustain our forests, braiding Indigenous Traditional Knowledge with Western Science.”
Carmen Li, a Grade 10 student at Coquitlam’s Pinetree Secondary, and Adam Lin, a Grade 8 student at Kwayhquitlum Middle in Port Coquitlam, took competition awards.
Three other winners are also from B.C. and one attends school in Alberta:
- Nerissa Ruan
- Grade 5, Delta Christian School (Delta)
- Venya Sharma
- Grade 3, Coquihalla School (Hope)
- Eden Sieffert
- Grade 10, College Heights Secondary (Prince George)
- Vika Krushko
- age seven, Dr. Lila Fahlman School (Edmonton)
“These youth winners did their homework, capturing a complex theme blending Indigenous knowledge and Western science. One winner (Nerissa’s entry) notably used a drone that plays a growing role in forest management for both Indigenous companies and others to replant trees, while cultural burning can rejuvenate forest biodiversity," said Bart Zych, FORED BC’s chairperson, in a news release.
Founded in 1925, the FORED BC Society is a charity that provides education about the sustainable use of environment and its natural resources with partners such as First Nations, NGOs and volunteers.
